Best Cafés
in Alwarpet
Chennai

Alwarpet's café scene has moved past the laptop-and-latte formula. The most interesting spaces in the neighbourhood today are built around a specific kind of utility — places that serve good food and excellent coffee but also hold a meeting, host a dinner, or let you disappear into a work pod for four hours without feeling rushed. Sortd, on Sir CV Raman Road, is the benchmark.

Sortd

Sortd is the most ambitious café in Alwarpet — and arguably in Chennai. It is not a work café with a few power sockets and a mediocre filter coffee. Sortd has private meeting rooms that seat up to 10 people, a rooftop that holds 40+, work pods with adjustable lighting and writable walls, a glass house extension with full kitchen views, and a food menu that reads nothing like any other café in the neighbourhood. Chef Gopalsamy Mani — who runs the BORN group's kitchens — built the Sortd menu specifically to break from the sandwich-pasta-pizza formula: deconstructed Madurai vada curry, tamarind rice with kola urundais, salads with pomegranate molasses, Turkish breakfast spreads, and cold brews that are actually cold brews. Tripadvisor Travellers' Choice (top 10% of properties). Featured in The Hindu. Hours: 9 AM – 10 PM, all days. Sir CV Raman Road, Alwarpet. ₹1,000 for two. Part of BORN (Beyond Ordinary Restaurants & Nosh).

A heritage bungalow café in the Alwarpet backstreets

A garden café set in a converted bungalow, popular for weekend brunches and anniversary celebrations. The food is broadly continental — egg dishes, pastas, and sandwiches — in a setting that leans heavily on its heritage architecture.

A neighbourhood coffee-and-dessert counter near Khader Nawaz Khan Road
